A Win for the Home Team

"Maybe good things come to those who wait, but the best things come to those who seize the moment and make it their own."
We had a sold out crowd at our baseball stadium tonight. It is the first time in a long time that our baseball team has been cheered on by a full house and the energy was intoxicating. We pulled into the parking lot and people were tailgating. There were pre game festivities and activates as well as swarms of people moving in to find their seats. The upper deck filled up, the halls were busy, the concession stands were backed up with hungry people waiting to buy food.
Halfway into the game, the fans started the wave. Sections full of people would stand all at once and throw their hands into the air while simultaneously cheering. The next section would jump up and so on until it looked like a wave. T he start was a little tough going as many sections weren't aware of their time to join in. The starting section persevered, energized by the cheers of other sections who were waiting for their turn to stand. Once we all got into sync, when each section caught on and stood on cue the result was remarkable. The wave became one long cheer of fans, each cycle getting louder and more energetic. By the fourth pass, the volume in the stadium was deafening. This was the first time my children were ever a part of the wave at a sporting event. Their faces as it went by showed joy that equaled the level of energy of each pass. By the last few cycles, our children's laughter and smiles were off the charts. When it was all over, they looked at me and said "That was awesome!" Our daughter couldn't believe how one person could start a movement and it would catch on in such a overpowering way. It was a moment they will not soon forget.
I remember my first sporting event. I was a freshman at Clemson University and we were going to my first football game. The girls in my dorm were sophomores and they took me under their wings to get my ticket and arrive at the game in time for a great spot on the field behind the goal post. We had our tiger paw's painted on our faces, grabbed a soda and took our spot to wait for the game to begin. When the football team ran down the hill into the stadium, touching the lucky Howard Rock, I knew I was in for something incredible. We spent the whole game on our feet, cheering and screaming and doing the wave, all in support of our home team. It was exhilarating. I know I called home to tell my parents about what I had experienced. I know my parents had an idea of how excited I was because I almost lost my voice with all of the cheering. I still have the t shirt from that game, sewn into a quilt, and I can remember the date, where I stood and who I was with. It remains a powerful memory to this day.
There is nothing like rooting on your home team, to stand shoulder to shoulder with people who wish the best for the same cause as you do. It is amazing to join voice and energy and spirit and to see it all pay off in a win. It is a great feeling to seize the moment and to make the memories that will last a lifetime!
