In the Middle of Nowhere
"A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in. " ~Robert Orben
I just came off of a week long vacation where my communication with the electronic world was all but shut off. My phone would get reception occasionally and my several attempts at connecting to the internet were futile. I spent twenty minutes one time waiting to get the welcome screen for my email before I realized I needed to give up. It was like being in technology detox. It was glorious.
I had no idea how technology dependant I have become. I wake up, pour my coffee and plug into a computerized world. It should be no surprise that our children spend their play time with virtual pets and virtual worlds to communicate with their friends. We do the same thing as adults. Once I realized that my email would have to wait and that I was rendered unreachable, I put my laptop away and stepped off the treadmill of my current life for one completely different.
~I climbed a rock wall
~I played Bingo
~I read to my children in big library chairs
~I ice skated with my daughter for her first time
~I sat through all my meals and ate deliberately
~I drank my coffee hot
~I buttered my bread
~I danced with my husband to beautiful jazz music
~I sat with my eyes closed as the sun poured down on me
~I walked a mile
~I watched the waves crash in on the beach
~I laughed
~I saw the sunrise and the sunset
~I lost track of time
~I spent time with my family
~I tossed water balloons
~I didn't watch tv
~I didn't read the paper
~I didn't see the news
A week away is a complete reset. It's a time to take a deep breath in. A time to take things slow and put things into perspective. A time to make memories and to give thanks and to dedicate time to the people I love. When I woke up today, I woke up whole and focused and refreshed. The world will come rushing back in and technology will pick up the pace of my life. I disconnected to the outside world and reconnected with myself. It doesn't get any better than that.

Lu,
I once forgot to take a break while running an FRG, and by the time the busy season hit, I was in way over my head without the energy to survive! That taught me the greatest lesson of all! Take time off! All the best, Pam
