Off the Beaten Path

"Don't think you're on the right road just because it’s a well-beaten path. " ~Author Unknown

I am a follow the rules kind of girl. I have to think really hard before going against the grain because it is not my normal nature. I don't drive faster than the speed limit, I am cautious at turns and intersections. I remember when we were first dating, Vic picked on me at a stop sign because I took so long to pull out into the road. "Someone, somewhere is driving within a ten mile radius and you may pull out in front of them." He thought he was really funny, I was just ensuring that I followed the rules.
On Sunday I found myself in a morale dilemma. We were in the parking lot of the baseball stadium after the game and traffic was thick trying to leave. We made the mistake of parking in a spot that didn't drive through to the next row so that exit would be easier. In front of me was a median with grass and behind me was a line of cars waiting to exit. It became very evident that backing out of this space was going to be something I did after the sun set and rose again. To add to the dilemma, the row of cars behind me was backed up for a long time because the exit had a problem. The best way out was to go up to the next exit in the parking lot, about five rows up. The only logical way to exit for our vehicle was to drive over the median and go left.
If Vic was driving, we would have not hesitated and he would have driven over the median without alerting anyone in the car. The kids love this about him, when he drives it is part of the journey that makes for fun. When I drive the kids need to bring something to do because it is so boring.
It is also worth noting that I have a Jeep Commander. I love my truck. I was sold on it when the car salesman drove it over a large mound of snow that had been shoveled and it looked like it was climbing Mount Everest. I fell in love with the idea that I'd be driving a truck that could scale mountains and cross streams. With that said, as close as it has gotten to off road is the occasional moment when I mistakingly park the tires partially off the driveway. When I do that, I back out and pull on the cement. We have rules you know.
Cautiously, with my heart beating quickly, I turned on the Jeep and put the truck in drive. I told the kids to buckle up because I was driving over the median and I took instruction from my rule breaking husband. I probably would need to use the gas pedal to get up on the curb and it might take a little bit of effort. I took my foot off the break and tapped the gas. I think my Jeep has been waiting for this moment. Without any effort the tires climbed the curb and the Jeep escaped it's parking space. For a brief moment I was climbing Mount Everest and crossing streams. The children cheered, my husband smiled at my ability to go against my own instincts and I felt invigorated.
Sometimes you have to take the path not taken.
