Pay it Forward
"Whoever gives to others will get richer, those who help others will themselves be helped." Proverbs 11:25
I loved it when the phrase "Pay it Forward" was coined. I loved the thought of doing great deeds for others so that they would in turn do something for someone else. I love the stories of people paying each others tolls on the road or extending a parking meter or doing a kind deed in anonymity. I am a doer. If I see something that is in need of repair, I will do something about it. I am the first to throw my hand in the air when someone needs a ride or needs a meal cooked or needs help. If anyone has ever asked me how they can repay me, I have always said, "Someone will need you someday, you can pay it then."
My day has come. Never, never, never in a million years, did I think the payback would land on my door. I've always been so confident to think that I would never need a helping hand. The kindness has not come at a trickle either. The army's of volunteers have amassed, the marching orders have been spoken and the movement is in full swing to keep my house running smoothly.
What is happening around me is overwhelming. From the moment I lay on the ball field, looking up at the paramedics and firemen who would transport me to the hospital, to way into the future, people have linked hands to carry me through my troubles.
Every night a different family stops by my door carrying a meal fit for kings. They shuttle in the snacks, the main course and the dessert, they set up flowers, they bring decorative napkins, they hustle in with smiles. Like elves they set up the kitchen and then in a blink with a smile and a wave, they are gone. Cars drive up in the mornings to take kids to school. Cars stop by during the day to ensure that the fridge is full and the laundry is done. The phone rings off the hook with questions like, "Are you okay? What can I do? Do you want a milkshake?". The phone also rings with well wishes and reminders from across the country of how much I am cared for.
I cried many tears when I shattered my ankle because the pain was excruciating. Since that day, because of the incredible outpouring of kindness from my community of friends and family, I have cried thousands of more tears.
I cannot stand on my own, and because of this, I have been lifted onto the shoulders of a great many amazing people. I will forever be grateful. I cannot wait to pay it forward.
