"How could anyone ever tell you
You were anything less than beautiful?
How could anyone ever tell you
You were less than whole?
How could anyone fail to notice
That your loving is a miracle?
How deeply you're connected to my soul?"   Libby Roderick

Those words are the lyrics to a song that my children sing at their school. The song was written by Libby Roderick after a visit to an orphanage and it has come to mean so much to people of all walks of life. I have found myself singing this song often throughout the past few days.
Being immobile has been challenging. I'm an extreme optimist, but this injury is trying to take it's toll on my spirit. Every time I find myself unable to do something I hear the word "Invalid" pop into my head. My mom calls this my computer. Our computers tell us things and we have to sort out whether it is the right data to keep or to delete. I looked up "Invalid" and it means something without foundation. My foundation is shattered right now, my physical foundation. I have to be careful to not allow my emotional foundation to tumble as well. Because of this, I have to check my computer and make sure I'm not letting any negative "data" get in to bring me down. That is where the song comes in.
When the word invalid comes into my mind, I replace it with Libby's song. When the pain of my injury flares up, I sing the song to it. Last night, when my leg decided to cramp up, I talked it into relaxing by repeating the song. I sang my injury to sleep, if you will.
I thought last night about the warriors who have returned from war with a limb missing. Where I can look now and curse the ugly cast on my leg, for them there is only air. I can count down the days until my leg is healed, they will forever remember the day their leg was amputated. I can only imagine the things running through their minds. If my foundation is rattled, theirs has been taken out from under them.
Today, my wishes, my thoughts, and my prayers go to those wounded warriors and their families. Incredible heroes who gave so much of themselves in defense of our country. Thank you for your sacrifice. Nothing could better sum up my thoughts like Libby's song.
