Reach for the Stars
"America is a nation with many flaws, but hopes so vast that only the cowardly would refuse to acknowledge them." ~James Michener
The space shuttle launched on a beautifully clear evening just recently at the end of our youngest's baseball game. Night launches are spectacular. You see the bright red flame of the engines and a clear white light of the spacecraft as it soars into outer space.
When the launch occurred, most adults looked to the sky and pointed and remarked at how beautiful it was. The amazing thing was what many of the 7 to 9 year old boys did on the baseball team. As soon as they realized there was a space shuttle, they ran to the outfield fence. With reckless speed and determination, they began to climb it, and when they reached the top they stretched up their arms to the sky.
I'm not sure what they thought they were doing. Maybe they thought they could climb and reach the shuttle, grab along and go for a ride. Maybe they thought they were going to wave goodbye. Maybe they were reaching for a dream they have to go to the moon. Whatever they were doing, it was an amazing sight. With the backdrop of a moon filled night, there was the reality of space flight and the fence lined with young dreamers.
That is one of the most fantastic things about American. Whatever your dream, if you have the will to work toward it and the determination to follow it, you can be anything you want to be.
