The Circle of Friends

"Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down. " ~Oprah Winfrey

There is an amazing statue at a children's museum in St Louis, MO that I can picture in my minds eye. Several children are cast in pewter and standing in the grass of the garden. There are more than five of them and they are holding hands as if to form a circle. The neat thing about the statue is that there is an empty place where anyone can stand and join in. You cannot pass the statue without walking to it, grabbing the hands of the end children and putting yourself in the circle. All of the children have those joy filled faces of children at play. If you are quiet enough, you can hear them laugh and giggle. When the sun shines just right on this place in the garden, I imagine you could even see them move.
There is something incredibly powerful about  putting yourself into the circle. When you reach your hands out and connect with others there is an energy. This is what it is like to have a circle of friends. When you hold tight to each others hands, when you open up to each others hearts, there is the same joy as being a child. The circle of friends keeps you young.
My circle of friends hold me up when times get tough. Just as it was as a child, if the momentum of the play got too fast and you lost your footing, those hands you were holding would lift you back up. My friends are doing that now as I work through my injury. With email jokes and well wishes, phone calls and laughter and all types of craziness, my feet don't need to touch the ground. I've got my circle to hold me high.
My circle of friends keeps me focused. When the world seems so big that it may swallow me, I can look to their faces, all looking inward and remember that I'm not alone. In case the picture outside the circle gets distorted or overwhelming, their smiles bring me back. In their expressions I remember that I'm human.
Greatest of all is that my circle of friends is always growing. Just like that statue in St Louis, there is always room for one more. There are always outstretched hands welcoming in another. No matter where you are in your life, you have a place.

C'mon, grab my hand, join us, everything is going to be okay.
