My Cup of Tea
"There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be much diminished by a nice cup of tea." ~Bernard-Paul Heroux
There is a reason why the saying "That's my cup of tea" came about. It means that something is so likable that it can be claimed by the person saying it. A "Cup of Tea" is someone's slice of heaven, someone's answer to it all.
I never appreciated tea until I reentered the workforce. In our office, I had a co-worker, a dear friend, who would always brew a cup of tea in the afternoon. One afternoon she invited me to join her and she made me a cup of delicious tea. For a few minutes, we sat together in my office and enjoyed our hot drinks while talking about things not related to work. This became a ritual that we shared for the rest of our time together.
Some days work would be so crazy for me that I couldn't get away from my desk long enough to enter the kitchen. On those days, she would peek in my door, hold up a mug and raise her eyebrows. With a look she knew that the answer was yes, that I needed her help getting to our tea time and she would make my tea for me. Some days her work load was overwhelming and it was my turn to stand quietly in the doorway with a mug. The answer was always a hearty "Yes, please save me with a cup of tea!"
The beautiful thing about a cup of tea is that you have to slow down to drink it. Tea is hot, it has to be to brew correctly. You cannot gulp it down or you will burn your mouth. You have to wait for it to cool down and you have to sip it. Life has gotten so hectic that the precious time it takes to cool a cup of tea is too long to wait for some people. The easiest thing to forget when life is moving too fast is to slow down and take time to think.
This morning I brewed a cup of tea in the silence of the morning. This is the time when the children haven't been awaken and the lunches haven't been packed and the chaos of school preparation hasn't begun. As the sun rose I sipped my favorite tea and felt the warmth of the steam coming off the cup. The slow down moments of reflection are good for the soul. Those moments are my cup of tea.
