True North

"In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest." ~Henry Miller, The Books in My Life

I've always loved compasses. To look at one makes you believe that you will never lose your way. The arrow always points you North and can help you orient yourself to where you are at any given moment. What I believe is that we all have an internal compass that points us to our own True North.
True North is what we know to be the best for ourselves. With everything I encounter in my day there are choices. From the important to the mundane, I have a choice to make. Do I park the car far away and walk the extra distance for the benefit of my health? Do I chose the kind words instead of the destructive ones because I'm tired? Do I spend the extra time cleaning up the mess or sit just a little bit longer? Do I write the letter, make the phone call, send the email that reaches out to someone who needs a friend? Do I chose the easier path or the harder one?
My True North has evolved slowly over the course of my lifetime. It has been shaped by the people who have mattered in my life. It has been designed by the things that have made an impact in my life and shaped my beliefs. If I slow down enough and consult my internal compass, the direction I go in my days will always be the right one. I have the answers to all of the things that I face, all I have to do it slow down enough to listen.
Life is complicated and the days are full, fast and furious. We'll make a million decisions today before the sun sets. Take the time to consult your inner compass and ensure that the choice you chose lines up with your True North. Our today's and tomorrows depend on it.
